$250,000 For the Cause
MANCHESTER, NH (October 4, 2004) - Carpet One is joining the
fight against breast cancer with a cause-related fundraising
campaign, “Carpet One Welcomes Your Support,” which
kicks off this October for National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. During the month of October, nearly 800 Carpet One retail
stores throughout the U.S. will donate all profits from sales
of specially designed welcome mats to the American Cancer Society.
Through this campaign, the leading floor covering retailer
will raise a minimum of $250,000, specifically earmarked for
breast cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
The grassroots initiative will also raise breast cancer awareness
in local communities throughout the U.S.
“Information is a powerful tool in the fight against
breast cancer,” said Ralph B. Vance, MD, Fellow, American
College of Physicians, national volunteer president of the American
Cancer Society. “Together with Carpet One we are raising
awareness of the potentially life-saving information about breast
cancer available today. In addition, monies raised through this
campaign will help the Society fund better ways to combat this
disease in the future.”
According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is
the most frequently diagnosed non-skin cancer in women and ranks
second among cancer deaths in women. This year alone, more than
215,000 new cases will be diagnosed and more than 40,000 lives
will be lost as a result of breast cancer.

By joining the American Cancer Society in the fight against
breast cancer, we are working to assist with an issue that impacts
our customers, our communities, our friends and our families,”
said Dean Marcarelli, Carpet One Co-Chief Operating Officer.

custom-designed welcome mats, each emblazoned with a pink ribbon
design, the internationally recognized symbol for breast cancer
awareness:
- “Tree of Life.” Features a traditional design
of intertwined vines in moss green hues along a black background.
- “Stripes of Hope.” Presents a modern look with
its bold graphic design of thin vertical stripes in alternating
shades of cranberry red, slate blue, moss green and black.
- “Everlasting Evergreen.” Integrates tonal shades
of dark to light green fern patterns silhouetted against a
dark background.
Made of plush nylon, the welcome mats are water and stain
resistant, machine-washable, and can be used both indoors and
